Working out of the box!

By Jordy HUI

Global Business program has a well-established career support system allowing me to know more about different career paths and options. The strong career support set a good path for me to communicate with alumni and that was the time I confirmed my interest in the financial sector. I applied for overseas internship through HKUST’s ASEAN internship network that brought me to UOB Kay Hian in Singapore.

I worked in the Equity Research Department and Private Wealth Management Department for 2 months. I was mainly responsible for updating data in different reports and conducting analysis on different financial products. The internship offered an extensive exposure, as I was able to learn about the Singapore’s financial market.  I also participated in the interim announcement of a Singaporean bank which was truly eye opening. With Singapore being another Asian financial hub, the internship allowed me to look into the Asian financial market in another new perspective.

More importantly, the internship didn’t only train up my technical skills but also soft skills. Throughout the internship, I had the opportunity to work with colleagues of different nationalities including American, Indian, Malaysian and Singaporean. I learned to work in a diverse and inclusive environment and cope with different working styles.

GBUS has offered a very comprehensive training for me to reach out globally including study trips and different cultural activities. GBUS also has a diverse environment which I am comfortable to talk and work with people of different cultures. The internship allowed me to practice the communication skills I learned in GBUS and apply it to my future career.
